Today’s Focus: The Bigger Winner!
Precious Heavenly Father, as I enter into Your presence today I ask that You would reveal Your plan and Your purpose for my life. Remove anything that Satan would use as a distraction. Allow my heart, my mind and my body to be transformed into exactly what You created me to be. For it's in Jesus' name I pray, amen.
This Week’s Treasure:
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
One of the only things I don’t like about NBC’s show, The Biggest Loser is its name. Aside from that, I have to admit, I’m a junkie. Isn’t it amazing to watch the contestants drop so much weight in the confines of one week?
People ask me all the time, “Isn’t that unrealistic?” Of course it is… unless you have six to eight hours a day to dedicate to your workouts and unless you have an elite team of trainers, physicians, life coaches and physical therapists at your beck and call.
You don’t? Hmm. That’s weird. Kidding.
I think the show’s bigger intent is to show us the capabilities of the human body, mind and heart. Certainly if they can lose 50 percent of their body weight… if they can be morbidly obese and still train with the world’s toughest trainers and thrive in those intense workouts and completely overhaul their lives… it must be possible for you to fit back into your skinny jeans.
Almost everyone loves a makeover story, right? But, you have noticed how notoriously difficult the second week is for the contestants? Some of you are saying, “I don’t watch the show! Enough of this already!” Bear with me. This might give you needed perspective on the week you just finished.
The contestants eat the same and train the same, if not better, than they did the first week, but typically with far fewer results. Why the heck is that?
Chances are good that their bodies were so conditioned to live years in an unhealthy lifestyle. Then out of nowhere, they turned their lives around 180 degrees. The first week their bodies let go of a lot of excess weight. For their bodies, it wasn’t worrisome because they still had a tremendous amount of excess stored energy in the form of body fat.
But the second week their bodies said something like this, “Whoa! Doesn’t my person know that they are losing all of this stored energy? What if I need it in the case of famine? Uh-oh. Maybe I should hang onto this extra body fat for survival. Slow down thyroid! Slow down metabolism!”
So, what do the contestants do? Well, what we see from watching the show… as I speak for us groupies… they keep going. They don’t lose sight of their goals or what it takes to make it happen. Since they are being fed (I understand they have brilliant minds watching their nutrition), their bodies begin to trust the process and they start losing weight again.
This may have happened to you. You may have worked hard this week to overhaul your heart, mind and body, but for some reason you don’t see the results you had hoped for.
If that’s the case, first check and see if there were areas where you fell off track.
Maybe you did… if so, be happy you know what went wrong because that means you have a controllable solution. But if you know you did everything you could and you are lacking results, this is a defining moment for you. Trust the process. God wants you to have crazy success! He has plans to prosper you, not to harm you (Jeremiah 29:11).
Keep on keepin’ on! Psst… Don’t forget to reward yourself for this second week!
Dear Lord, as I bow once again before Your throne, I am relieved… relieved that I don’t have to try and be something I’m not. It’s exhausting, and yet no matter how hard we try You will always know exactly who we are despite what our packaging says. I will never know why You still choose to purchase any and all who will come but Father, I am so glad that You do. You take our dents and damaged places and make them new. It’s because of You and Your work in and through our lives that we become something of worth. May it not be in vain Lord. Let us continue to live in such a way that brings praise to Your precious and holy name, amen.
