Today’s Special is: Why Mentoring Matters
Carefully prepared just for you by your friend, Jill Beran
Main Ingredient:

Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

Titus 2:4-5 NIV

Entrée:

Why do I need to clean my room?  Why do I have to help my sister?  Why?  Why?  Why?

It’s a question my children often ask, but friend, if we’re honest I believe we can admit to wondering the same thing.  Knowing the reason they need to do something often motivates my children and it encourages me as well.

In Titus 2, the older women are instructed to train the younger women.  Paul even suggests areas we need to address, but today rather than focusing on the “what” of mentoring, I challenge you to think about the “Why?”

Why does mentoring matter?

I could give you a list of the reasons it’s been important in my life and perhaps you could do the same, but let’s look at the best answer to our question.

Why do I need to be a mentor and be mentored?

Friend, take a minute and think about these words in Titus 2:5:

…so that no one will malign the word of God.

Join me in looking at the definition of the word malign:

to speak evil against; to speak harshly or unfairly.

Do we want others to speak harshly about God’s Word?  No.  So how do we keep that from happening?  We follow Paul’s command in Titus 2...we mentor and be mentored.

Mentoring, the idea of one generation teaching another, has always been important to me, but the “so that” in Titus 2:5 added even more value.  This is about giving back and reaching out, but friend it’s also so much more.  Mentoring is about preventing the holy, living and active Word of God from being maligned.

And friend, the Word we long to uphold is what will equip us!!

Let 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV) encourage you today!

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Mentoring is a good work that matters!!  We’ve answered the Why?  Now may the reason for mentoring encourage us to open God’s Word and let Him equip us to do His work!

Take Out:

Today I encourage you to spend some time in prayer and ask God to increase your love for His Word.  Commit to spending more time reading the Bible and as you do, He will give you the desire to live it out.  Mentoring will be one of the good works that results from your time in the Word!!

Dessert:

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Word…it is living and active and has the power to transform lives.  I ask You to work through it in big ways in my life…use it to teach, rebuke, correct and train me Lord.  I pray for more passion for Your Word and more time in Your Word.  Help me remember the reason for mentoring Lord and use that to motivate me to learn from others and be a mentor for some.  Help me do the work You’ve set before me Lord.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A great book that will help you study God’s Word and open your eyes to more “So That” verses is Living So That by Wendy Blight.  .

Linda, that is a wonderful prayer!  I'm grateful God is answering it in your life!  I too have verses posted so we can see them often and am amazed at how God uses them in powerful ways!  Blessings to you!!

Stephanie, thank you for your encouraging words!  And the prayer was I needed to pray yet again...praising God for always providing what we need!  Blessings!

Michelle, I join you in thanking God for the mentors who pour into the lives of so many and pray we will all do the same in a world that needs it more everyday!   Thanks for sharing!  Blessings to you!

Noelle, this "So That" really spoke to me back when Wendy did the online study in 2012...actually led me to step out and start a Titus24U group at our church - a time for women of all ages to come together share their faith, study, fellowship, pray and worship.  We met last night and it was again a blessed time!  Thankful for YOU!!

In order to memorize scripture, I have written the verses on my bathroom & bedroom mirrors so I would see them often.  About 4 months ago, I wrote,"Lord, give me a passion for Your Word."  Over a period of several weeks, a passion to study His Word began to stir my heart.  It was pleasantly surprising to feel that appetite grow.  Don't know if it would work for anyone else, but it sure worked for me.

Jill... oh how I needed the closing prayer today! I join you in praying that God will continue to grow in me the desire to read His Word... to long for His instruction... so that I might live the life He has for me.

Thank you for listening to His voice and for speaking His truths! Sweet Blessings my dear sister!

Jill, I so love the wisdom you provide within your teaching!  I never considered this as a reason to mentor.  Yet in our culture there are many who would misinterpret and degrade God's word and His intentions.  Now I see why it is our role as Christians to protect it fiercely.  And to prepare those walking after us to live in truth that bits of society would like to chip away at.  As your words reflect, the best way to do so is to fully understand and breathe in every sentence of God's precious guidance on how to live.  Our kids have been studying how the bible is a treasure, more precious to us than gold (Psalm 119:72).  I am just halfway through Wendy Blight's Living a So That Life but I agree that this book is a blessing to those of us who want to dive deep, even if for the first time, into a living, breathing, beautiful treasure that is the word of God.  Thank you to this community of women who step up in wisdom and faith to mentor so many of us reading and listening!

Jill, I SO appreciate this!  I've never looked at the "So That" in the verse before.  And I agree that Wendy's book and study is a must read!  Thank you for YOU!  xoxo
