Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the Most High God, come out, and come here.” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire. Daniel 3:26 NKJV

They felt the scorching heat of the fiery furnace as they were about to be thrown into the flames. They were unable to break free from the ties that bound them. The fire was so intense that their persecutors were killed as they cast the three Hebrews into the furnace. Surely, they were fearful, but they trusted in the Most High God, El Elyon.

King Nebuchadnezzar could not believe his eyes! The three Hebrews were no longer bound. They were walking around in the furnace with a fourth man who was like the Son of God. The king called for them to come out. What they saw was amazing. “The fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them” (Daniel 3:27).

Christian, that very same God who delivered them from the midst of the fire, the Most High God, El Elyon, is the God we serve. He will be in the midst of the fire with us. El Elyon is more powerful than anything that can cause us fear. When the smoke of trials begins to choke you, call on El Elyon.  When you feel the heat of the flames as the doctor gives you the bad news, trust in El Elyon. When you are bound with anxiety, cry out to El Elyon. He will bring you from the midst of the fire just like He did for the young Hebrew men. We don’t have to fight the flames alone because we are servants of the Most High God, El Elyon.

El Elyon is one of the many names for God in the Bible. It means “God Most High.” If time permits, look up these verses:  Gen. 14:22, Ps. 57:2, Luke 8:28. What do these verses say about El Elyon? In what ways can learning about El Elyon Increase your faith?

Dear Most High God, El Elyon, thank You that You are God over all things and Possessor of all things. We praise You for delivering the three Hebrews, and we praise You for the many times You have delivered us from our fiery trials. In Jesus’ name, amen.
